  • Is Dane harmed?

Tomlin's answer, part (1): The caterpillar view

Tomlin p. 40

  1. Caterpillars and butterflies are "fundamentally different kinds of things, with different lives and different goods"
  2. Only two things of the same basic kind  can be compared (the Type of being condition--p. 41)
  3. Therefore, we can't say that a caterpillar is harmed or benefitted by becoming a butterfly
  4. Likewise, children and adults are "fundamentally different kinds of things, with different lives and different goods."
  5. Therefore,
    • we can't say that Erin is benefitted or harmed by staying a child forever.
    • and we can't say Dane is benefitted or harmed by becoming an adult sooner than usual.

How caterpillars change into butterflies

Is the butterfly just a different organism? It might matter whether butterflies remember anything from their lives as caterpillars.  Oddly enough, they do.

Children and adults have "different lives and different goods"
  • Normative stageism -- different goods/bads for different stages of life
  • Will there be a separate norm for old age....he doesn't say so .... we'll explore in module 4

This picture is in synch with....
  • indigenous stage theories (Arnett)

This picture contrasts with....
  • Hedonism
  • Objective list theory -- one list of goods/bads for all humans
  • Enhanced objective list theory -- one list of goods/bads for all humans, but should add goods of childhood

What does Tomlin say about the specific goods that define child or adult wellbeing?

  2. But is it wrong to give Dane the pill?
Has he solved the puzzles of Erin and Dane well?
