Covering the tasks
EXPLAIN Identify the author, explain the main ideas or arguments in the passage. To fully explain you may need to define terms and/or give examples.
- example: experience machine
SITUATE Discuss the role the passage plays in the author’s article as a whole. This will involve discussing ideas that came before the passage, after the passage, or both.
CONTRAST Consider how the ideas in the passage relate to a competing position discussed by the author or another author. If you wish, part of your discussion can be evaluative
Time Management
- don't cover extraneous ideas (e.g. Tomlin passage, Dane)
- don't repeat all points, if they're clear to begin with (e.g. Arnett passage)
- you only need one contrast!
Doing better next time
- do the reading carefully enough that you have a sense of the flow of ideas in the article
- don't just pluck out RR answers
- make more use of the class blog to study
- make sure you understand the tasks, which we'll discuss
- attend regularly, come to review class
- evaluate use of laptops--are you distracted during class?
